Burkina Faso Connectivity Degradation Lasted Over 10 Days
Burkina Faso experienced a significant, prolonged degradation in internet connectivity beginning on May 18 and lasting until May 29. The disruption, which spanned over 10 days, was most pronounced in the ping-slash24 signal, which measures active reachability to IPv4 network blocks.
Technical Details
The ping-slash24 signal recorded a severity score of 380,972 during the event, which lasted from 14:30 UTC on May 18 to 00:30 UTC on May 29. This signal tracks ICMP reachability across IPv4 /24 network prefixes, indicating a drop in active connectivity. The gtr.sarima signal, which measures deviation from expected traffic patterns, showed a 24% drop from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity based on backscatter measurements, fell by 77% from its peak. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane signal, which reflects routing visibility, remained stable throughout the period.
The cause has not been publicly attributed. Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
