Uganda experienced a significant disruption to its internet routing infrastructure beginning on July 15, 2026. The event, which lasted for approximately 12 days, was characterized by a severe degradation in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane. The disruption concluded around 00:30 UTC on July 28.
Technical Details
The disruption recorded a severity score of 247,298, with the primary impact observed on the BGP signal. This signal measures the visibility of a country’s IP address prefixes across the global internet routing table. The number of visible BGP routes for Uganda remained stable at 4,632 throughout the event, indicating no large-scale withdrawal of prefixes but a potential loss of optimal routing paths.
Concurrently, other connectivity metrics showed varying degrees of impact. The Merit Network Telescope (merit-nt) signal, a proxy for overall internet traffic and scanning activity, recorded an 83% drop from its peak value. The Google Traffic Response (gtr) signal, which measures traffic volume to Google services, fell by 51% from its peak. Active probing for IPv4 network reachability (ping-slash24) showed a minor 2% decline.
