French Polynesia experienced a prolonged disruption to its internet connectivity beginning on July 21, with effects persisting until August 2. The event was characterized by a significant degradation in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, which facilitates routing information between networks. The disruption lasted for approximately 11.9 days.
Technical Details
The event recorded a severity score of 20,803, primarily driven by the BGP signal. The BGP median signal, which measures the visibility of network prefixes in the global routing table, showed a sustained anomaly. The Merit Network Telescope (merit-nt) signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity based on backscatter traffic, also showed a complete drop in observable activity during the period. Other data plane metrics, including active probing for ICMP reachability (ping-slash24), showed only minor deviations.
The cause has not been publicly attributed.
Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period on August 2.
