Honduras experienced a disruption to its internet routing infrastructure on Tuesday, affecting the control plane for approximately two hours. The event was recorded between 08:20 and 10:30 UTC, with two distinct periods of heightened severity.
Technical Details
The disruption primarily impacted the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), the system that manages routing between networks. The BGP signal recorded a severity score of 507 across two 15-minute periods, indicating a significant reduction in the visibility of Honduran network prefixes to the global internet. During the event, the average number of visible prefixes dropped by 17% from its peak.
Concurrently, other connectivity metrics showed deviations. Active probing for ICMP reachability across IPv4 address blocks showed a 13% drop from its peak. Backscatter measurements, a proxy for overall internet activity, recorded a more pronounced drop of 97% from its peak value. The cause has not been publicly attributed.
Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation window.
