Mongolia experienced a brief but notable disruption to its internet routing infrastructure on August 4, 2026. The event, which lasted just over an hour, was characterized by a significant degradation in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, a key signal for network visibility and routing stability.

Technical Details

The disruption occurred between 18:30 and 19:35 UTC. The primary affected metric was the BGP median signal, which recorded a severity score of 73. This signal measures the control plane visibility of internet protocol prefixes, indicating a period where routing announcements and withdrawals were less stable than usual.

Concurrently, other measurement signals showed related anomalies. The Merit Network Telescope (merit-nt) backscatter signal, a proxy for aggregate network connectivity, dropped to zero during the event, indicating a complete cessation of observed background traffic. The normalized Google Traffic Ration (gtr-norm) signal, which measures deviation from an expected traffic baseline, fell by 64% from its peak. Active probing for ICMP reachability (ping-slash24) also showed a 5% reduction from its peak reachability levels.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.
