Kiribati experienced a brief but significant disruption to its internet routing control plane on Thursday, August 13. The event began at 19:40 UTC and concluded by 20:30 UTC, lasting approximately 50 minutes. The primary impact was observed on the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), which governs how networks announce and exchange routing information.

Technical Details

The disruption registered a severity score of 95, with the BGP signal showing a 2% drop from its normal baseline. The BGP.median signal, which measures the visibility of Kiribati’s IP address prefixes to the global routing table, was the only signal formally flagged as affected. Concurrently, other metrics showed related fluctuations. The ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across the country’s IPv4 address blocks, recorded a 33% drop in activity. The gtr-norm signal, a normalized measure of traffic flow, also showed a 45% decline from its observed peak during the event window. The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
