New Zealand Internet Connectivity Disrupted for 90 Minutes
New Zealand experienced a significant internet connectivity disruption on June 20, lasting approximately 90 minutes. The event began at 12:20 UTC and concluded by 13:50 UTC, with a peak severity score of 8,879 recorded against the primary connectivity signal.
Technical Details
The disruption was characterized by a severe drop in the ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 network blocks. The signal recorded a drop magnitude of -99% from its peak, falling to a minimum of 50 measurement points from an average of over 3,200.
Other network signals showed varied impacts. The gtr signal, which forecasts deviations from expected traffic baselines, fell by 81% from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a backscatter measurement used as a connectivity proxy, dropped by 54%. The border gateway protocol (BGP) signal, indicating control plane visibility for network prefixes, remained stable with no observable drop.
The cause has not been publicly attributed.
Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
