Belize experiences multi-day internet connectivity degradation
Belize experienced a significant internet connectivity degradation lasting nearly three days, beginning on June 18. The disruption, which started around 06:20 UTC, was characterized by a severe drop in network reachability across the country’s IPv4 address space. Connectivity was reported restored by 00:30 UTC on June 21.
Technical Details
The primary affected metric was ICMP reachability across IPv4 /24 prefixes, which recorded a severity score of 114,060. This signal measures active probing results to network blocks and indicated a substantial reduction in successful connections. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, which advertises network routes, remained stable and showed no significant change. Backscatter measurements, a proxy for aggregate connectivity, showed a peak drop of 55% from normal levels.
The cause has not been publicly attributed.
Network conditions were observed to have returned to baseline by the end of the observation period.
