Belize experiences prolonged connectivity disruption

alert2blue

Belize experienced a significant, week-long degradation in internet connectivity beginning June 18. The disruption lasted approximately 6.8 days, with the most severe impact recorded on the ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across the country’s IPv4 address space.

Technical Details

The disruption generated a severity score of 279,507. The primary affected metric was the ping-slash24 signal, which saw a drop in median reachability. Other signals showed varying impacts: the gtr-norm signal, a forecast deviation from expected traffic, fell 66% from its peak, while the merit-nt signal, an aggregate connectivity proxy, dropped 82%. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, which advertises network routes, remained stable throughout the event, showing no observable withdrawal of Belizean prefixes.

The cause has not been publicly attributed. The disruption was observed as ongoing at the end of the monitoring window at 00:30 UTC on June 25.
