Bhutan Connectivity Disruption Lasted 90 Minutes

Bhutan experienced a network disruption affecting its internet routing infrastructure on Sunday, July 13. The event lasted approximately 90 minutes, beginning at 17:05 UTC and concluding by 18:35 UTC. The primary impact was observed on the country’s Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane.

Technical Details

The disruption registered a severity score of 173. The BGP signal, which measures the visibility of a country’s IP address prefixes to the global routing system, showed a median prefix count dropping by 2% from its peak. Concurrently, the ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 network blocks, recorded a 6% drop in its peak value. Backscatter measurements, a proxy for aggregate connectivity, showed a complete loss of signal during the event.

The cause has not been publicly attributed. Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
