Equatorial Guinea experienced a significant Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) disruption beginning on July 14, lasting nearly six hours. The event, which started at 18:35 UTC, resulted in a severity score of 888 and concluded by 00:30 UTC on July 15. The disruption was isolated to the network control plane, with data plane connectivity remaining largely unaffected.
Technical Details
The primary impact was recorded on the BGP signal, which measures the control plane visibility of network prefixes. The median number of visible prefixes dropped by 6% during the event. In contrast, active probing for ICMP reachability across IPv4 /24 prefixes showed only a marginal 5% decline. Backscatter measurements, a proxy for aggregate connectivity, registered a complete loss of signal for the duration of the disruption.
The cause has not been publicly attributed. The disruption remained ongoing at last observation before restoration.
