Uganda experienced a prolonged internet connectivity disruption that began on July 15 and lasted for more than 13 days. The event was characterized by a significant degradation in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, a key signal for network routing visibility. The disruption concluded around 00:30 UTC on July 29.
Technical Details
The disruption recorded a severity score of 267,729, primarily driven by the BGP signal. The BGP median value, which measures the number of visible network prefixes in the global routing table, remained stable at 4,633 throughout the event. The Merit Network Telescope (merit-nt) signal, a proxy for overall connectivity based on backscatter traffic, dropped to zero, indicating a 100% reduction from its peak. The Google Traffic Response (gtr) signal, which measures traffic volume, showed a 55% drop from its observed peak. The ping-slash24 signal, measuring ICMP reachability across IPv4 address blocks, showed a minimal 2% degradation.
The cause has not been publicly attributed.
Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
