Syria experienced a significant, multi-day disruption to its internet connectivity beginning on July 26, with degradation persisting for nearly three days. The event primarily impacted the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), a critical system for routing traffic between networks globally. Connectivity was observed to be degraded from approximately 08:10 UTC on July 26 until restoration around 00:30 UTC on July 29.
Technical Details
The disruption registered a severity score of 6,970, centered on the BGP control plane. The BGP signal, which measures the visibility of a country’s network prefixes to the global internet, showed a sustained anomaly over the 2.7-day period. Concurrently, other measurement signals indicated broader network stress. The Merit Network Telescope (merit-nt) signal, a proxy for overall internet activity, recorded a drop of 73% from its peak observed volume.
Active probing for IPv4 reachability (ping-slash24) showed a 6% reduction, while normalized internet traffic volume (gtr-norm) was down 11% from its peak. The cause has not been publicly attributed.
The disruption was resolved by the morning of July 29.
