New Zealand experienced a significant connectivity degradation on Tuesday, September 2, 2026, affecting internet reachability for over two hours. The disruption began at 13:40 UTC and concluded by 16:30 UTC, with a severity score of 3,488. The primary impact was observed in active probing measurements across the country’s IPv4 address space.

Technical Details

The degradation was most pronounced in the ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 /24 network prefixes. The signal recorded a severity score of 3,488, with a peak drop in reachability of 36% from its normal baseline. The event consisted of two distinct periods of impact, from 13:40 to 15:30 UTC and again from 15:40 to 16:30 UTC.

Other network telemetry signals showed varied behavior. The gtr-norm signal, which tracks deviations from expected traffic baselines, recorded a 73% drop from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity, showed a 64% drop. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, responsible for routing announcements, remained stable throughout the event, showing no observable change in the number of visible prefixes.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation window.
