A multi-day disruption affecting the visibility of internet routing paths was recorded across Antarctica between August 29 and September 3. The event, which lasted approximately 4.4 days, primarily impacted the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, a key system for global network path advertisement.

Technical Details

The disruption began on August 29 at 15:25 UTC and concluded on September 3 at 00:30 UTC. The primary affected metric was the BGP median signal, which recorded a severity score of 55,634. This signal measures the control plane visibility of network prefixes, indicating a sustained reduction in the number of globally observable routing paths originating from the continent. Concurrent measurements of active IPv4 prefix reachability showed a minor, 6% reduction from peak levels during the same observation period.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Network routing visibility was reported restored by the end of the observation window.
