Nigeria experienced a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane disruption in the early hours of September 4, 2026. The event began at 00:15 UTC and lasted for approximately four hours, concluding by 04:30 UTC. The disruption was characterized by a significant drop in the visibility of network prefixes.

Technical Details

The primary affected metric was the BGP signal, which measures the control plane visibility of internet routing prefixes. The median BGP visibility dropped by 4% from its peak during the event, correlating with a severity score of 473. Other network health indicators, including active probing for IPv4 reachability and traffic volume measurements, showed minimal deviation from normal baselines, indicating the disruption was largely confined to the routing layer.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Network routing was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
