Nepal experienced a significant internet connectivity disruption beginning on September 1 and lasting for more than a day. The event, which started at approximately 17:10 UTC, was characterized by a severe degradation in the country’s Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing stability, a key control plane signal for internet traffic.

Technical Details

The disruption persisted until 00:30 UTC on September 3, lasting approximately 1.3 days. The BGP median signal recorded a severity score of 4,737 during the event. The BGP signal measures the stability of routing announcements that direct traffic between networks.

Other network health indicators showed concurrent declines. The gtr-norm signal, which measures deviation from expected traffic volume, dropped by 48% from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity, fell by 39% from its peak. In contrast, data plane signals for IPv4 reachability (ping-slash24) and latency showed only minor fluctuations of 3% or less.

Reported Cause

The cause of the disruption has not been publicly attributed.

Network connectivity was reported restored at the end of the observation period.
