Guatemala experienced a significant, prolonged disruption to its internet control plane visibility beginning on August 21. The event, which lasted over 13 days, was characterized by a severe degradation in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) signal, a key indicator of network routing stability.

Technical Details

The disruption period spanned from 08:25 UTC on August 21 to 00:30 UTC on September 4. The event generated a severity score of 22,898, based on the degradation of the BGP median signal. This signal measures the control plane visibility for internet routing prefixes, indicating a sustained period of instability in how networks within Guatemala announced their reachability to the global internet.

Other network health metrics showed varying impacts. The Merit Network Telescope (merit-nt) backscatter measurement, an aggregate connectivity proxy, recorded a 93% drop from its peak. The normalized Google Traffic Report (gtr-norm) signal, which measures deviation from an expected traffic baseline, fell by 66%. In contrast, active probing for IPv4 reachability (ping-slash24) and raw BGP prefix counts showed minimal percentage changes.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored at the end of the observation window.
