Tonga experienced a significant disruption to its internet routing infrastructure beginning on September 3. The event, which primarily affected the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, lasted for over 16 hours before concluding early on September 4 UTC.

The disruption to the BGP control plane began at 08:05 UTC on September 3 and ended at 00:30 UTC on September 4, lasting approximately 16.4 hours. The event registered a severity score of 1,201. The BGP signal measures the global visibility of a country’s internet routing prefixes from the control plane perspective. Concurrently, active probing for ICMP reachability across IPv4 /24 prefixes showed a 14% reduction from its peak. Backscatter measurements, which serve as a proxy for aggregate connectivity, recorded a complete 100% drop from their peak during the event.
The cause has not been publicly attributed.
Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
