French Polynesia experienced a prolonged internet connectivity disruption that began on July 21 and lasted for more than eight days. The event, which concluded on July 30, was characterized by a significant degradation in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane.

Technical Details

The disruption recorded a severity score of 15,551. The primary affected signal was BGP, which measures the visibility of network routing announcements on the global internet. The BGP signal remained at a constant, reduced level of 325 measurement points throughout the event, indicating a persistent loss of routing information.

Other network metrics showed varying impacts. The gtr-norm signal, a measure of traffic volume deviation from an expected baseline, dropped by 22% from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity based on backscatter measurements, showed a 100% drop from its peak, falling to zero at its lowest point. The ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 network blocks, showed a more modest 2% decline.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
