An internet connectivity disruption in the Solomon Islands persisted for approximately four days, beginning on July 31 and ending on August 4. The event was characterized by a significant degradation in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, a key signal for network routing visibility.

Technical Details

The disruption recorded a severity score of 16,735. The primary affected signal was BGP, which measures the visibility of network prefixes in the global routing system. The BGP signal remained at a constant, low level for the duration of the event.

Concurrently, other network health indicators showed substantial declines. The gtr-norm signal, which measures deviations from expected traffic volumes, fell by 83% from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity derived from backscatter measurements, dropped by 100%. The ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 network blocks, showed a 17% reduction in reachable prefixes.

The cause has not been publicly attributed. Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
