Belize experienced a significant, prolonged degradation in internet connectivity beginning on June 18. The disruption, which lasted nearly 12 days, primarily affected the reachability of its IPv4 network infrastructure. Connectivity was observed returning to normal levels by 00:30 UTC on June 30.
Technical Details
The disruption recorded a severity score of 486,315. The primary affected metric was the ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across the country’s IPv4 /24 network prefixes. This signal showed a sustained drop in reachability for the duration of the event.
Other network telemetry showed a 55% drop in backscatter measurements, a proxy for aggregate connectivity, and a 20% deviation from expected traffic baselines. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, which advertises network routes, remained stable throughout the period. The cause has not been publicly attributed.
The connectivity disruption remained ongoing for nearly the entire observation period before restoration.
