Syria experienced a significant, prolonged disruption to its internet routing infrastructure beginning on July 26, 2026. The event, which lasted nearly 12 days, was characterized by a severe degradation in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, a critical system for global network visibility. Connectivity was reported restored by 00:30 UTC on August 7.
Technical Details
The disruption recorded a severity score of 30,370, centered on the BGP signal. The BGP.median signal, which measures the control plane visibility of a country’s network prefixes to the global internet, showed a sustained anomaly from July 26 at 08:10 UTC through August 7 at 00:30 UTC. During this 11.7-day period, the number of visible prefixes remained static at 4,804, indicating a lack of normal routing updates.
Concurrently, other network health signals showed less severe deviations. The ping-slash24 signal, measuring ICMP reachability across active IPv4 address blocks, saw a modest 6% drop from its peak. The Merit Network Telescope (merit-nt) signal, an aggregate proxy for internet connectivity based on backscatter, recorded a 39% decline from its observed peak.
The cause has not been publicly attributed.
The disruption remained ongoing until its resolution in the early hours of August 7.
