Madagascar experienced a significant degradation in internet connectivity on August 21, 2026. The disruption began at 16:40 UTC and lasted for approximately two hours and twenty minutes, concluding by 19:00 UTC. The event was characterized by a sharp decline in network reachability across the country.

Technical Details

The primary affected metric was the ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across active IPv4 network prefixes. This signal recorded a severity score of 3,128 during the event, with a measured drop in reachability of 23% from its peak. Concurrently, the gtr-norm signal, which tracks deviations from expected traffic volumes, showed a 62% drop from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity, fell by 73% from its observed maximum.

The country’s Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, which manages routing announcements, remained stable throughout the event with no observed drop in visible prefixes. The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
