Angola experienced a significant, prolonged degradation in internet connectivity beginning on August 14, with effects persisting for more than nine days. The disruption was most pronounced in a key network backscatter measurement, which serves as a broad proxy for overall connectivity levels.

Technical Details

The degradation period lasted from approximately 14:00 UTC on August 14 to 00:30 UTC on August 24. The primary affected signal was the backscatter measurement, which recorded a severity score of 1,232,246 and showed a 56% drop from its peak value. This metric aggregates unsolicited network traffic to infer the state of internet connectivity.

Other network signals showed less severe impacts. The forecast deviation signal, which measures traffic against an expected baseline, recorded a 79% drop from its peak. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, responsible for routing announcements, remained stable throughout the event. Active probing for IPv4 reachability across network prefixes showed only a minor 4% reduction.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored at the end of the observation window.
