Iraq experienced a significant internet connectivity disruption early on August 26, affecting both network routing and data plane reachability. The event began at approximately 03:20 UTC and lasted for about 70 minutes, with a total severity score of 4,391,109. The disruption was most pronounced in active probing and routing control plane signals.

Technical Details

The primary impact was recorded on the ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 network prefixes. This signal recorded a severity score of 4,586, with a 69% drop from its peak value, indicating a sharp reduction in network responsiveness. Concurrently, the BGP signal, which reflects the visibility of network prefixes in the global routing table, showed a severity score of 958 and a 16% decline from its peak.

Other measurement signals also registered deviations. The gtr-norm signal, a normalized traffic volume indicator, fell 46% from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity based on backscatter measurements, recorded a more severe 77% drop from its observed maximum during the window.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by 04:30 UTC.
