Iraq experienced a significant connectivity disruption on Thursday, affecting both network reachability and routing visibility. The event began at 03:30 UTC on August 29 and lasted for approximately one hour. A combined severity score of 1,926,681 was recorded for the incident, which primarily impacted the country’s border gateway protocol and active probing signals.

Technical Details

The disruption was characterized by a sharp drop in two key internet health indicators. The ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 /24 prefixes, recorded a severity score of 2,596 and fell 68% from its peak. Concurrently, the bgp signal, which reflects control plane visibility for network prefixes, recorded a severity score of 742 and dropped 16% from its peak.

Other measurement signals also showed deviations during the observation window. The gtr-norm signal, a normalized traffic baseline, dropped 43% from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a backscatter measurement that serves as a proxy for aggregate connectivity, fell 83% from its peak.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by 04:30 UTC.
