New Zealand experienced a significant degradation in internet connectivity beginning on September 2, 2026. The disruption, which lasted for over six hours, primarily affected the reachability of IPv4 network prefixes across the country. The event was most pronounced between 18:20 and 21:30 UTC.

Technical Details

The disruption recorded an overall severity score of 7,591. The primary affected metric was the ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across active IPv4 /24 network prefixes. This signal showed three distinct periods of degradation, with the most severe period scoring 4,194.

Other network telemetry signals showed varying impacts. The gtr-norm signal, a normalized measure of traffic volume, recorded a 67% drop from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity based on backscatter measurements, showed a 57% decline. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, which manages routing information, remained stable throughout the event.

Reported Cause

The cause of the connectivity degradation has not been publicly attributed. No official statements or news reports identifying a root cause were available in the immediate aftermath of the event.

Connectivity was reported restored by 00:30 UTC on September 3.
