Nigeria’s internet control plane experienced a series of disruptions late Tuesday and into early Wednesday. The events, affecting the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), occurred in three distinct periods between 22:25 and 00:30 UTC on September 2-3, with a total duration of approximately two hours.

Technical Details

The primary disruption was observed in the BGP control plane, which manages the routing of traffic between networks. The median number of visible BGP routes dropped by 2% during the event, with a recorded severity score of 111. The three disruption periods were from 22:25 to 22:45 UTC, 22:50 to 23:20 UTC, and 00:05 to 00:30 UTC. Other network signals, including active probing for IPv4 reachability and traffic volume measurements, remained largely stable, indicating the issue was confined to routing visibility rather than a widespread data plane outage.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by 00:30 UTC.
