Burkina Faso Connectivity Degradation Lasted Over Eight Days
Burkina Faso experienced a significant, prolonged degradation in internet connectivity beginning on May 18. The disruption, which lasted over eight days, primarily affected the reachability of the country’s IP address space. The event concluded on May 27 at approximately 00:30 UTC.
Technical Details
The primary disruption was recorded on the ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 /24 prefixes, with a severity score of 307,829. The event spanned from 14:30 UTC on May 18 to 00:30 UTC on May 27. During this period, the gtr.sarima signal, which forecasts deviations from expected traffic baselines, showed a 31% drop from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a backscatter measurement that serves as an aggregate connectivity proxy, recorded a complete 100% drop in activity. The bgp signal, reflecting control plane visibility for network prefixes, remained stable throughout the event.
Reported Cause
The cause of the multi-day connectivity degradation has not been publicly attributed.
Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
