Burkina Faso experienced a significant internet connectivity disruption on July 11, lasting nearly three hours. The event began shortly after 01:40 UTC and continued until approximately 04:30 UTC, affecting both data plane reachability and network control plane visibility. The disruption registered a high overall severity score of 3,357,887.

Technical Details

The primary impact was observed in the ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across the country’s IPv4 address space. This signal recorded a severity score of 3,744, with reachability dropping by 30% from its peak during the event. Concurrently, the BGP signal, which tracks the visibility of network prefixes in the global routing table, showed a degradation with a severity score of 897, representing a 6% drop from its peak visibility.

Other measurement signals corroborated the disruption. The gtr-norm signal, a normalized traffic volume indicator, fell by 93% from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity based on backscatter measurements, dropped by 43%.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation window.
