Burundi experienced a significant internet connectivity disruption beginning on August 11 and lasting for more than 22 hours. The event, which started at 01:50 UTC and concluded at 00:30 UTC on August 12, affected both the network control plane and data plane reachability. Technical Details
The disruption was observed across two key network signals. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) signal, which reflects the visibility of network routes in the global control plane, showed a degradation with a severity score of 3,556 for the entire 22.7-hour period. Concurrently, the ping-slash24 signal, which measures active ICMP reachability across IPv4 address blocks, recorded a more intense but shorter disruption. This data plane degradation had a severity score of 6,864 and lasted from 16:50 UTC to 21:20 UTC on August 11, representing a 78% drop from peak reachability.
The cause has not been publicly attributed.
Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
