Uganda experienced a significant disruption to its internet control plane on Tuesday, July 15. The event, which affected Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) visibility, lasted approximately two and a half hours, beginning around 22:00 UTC and concluding by 00:30 UTC on July 16.
Technical Details
The disruption registered a severity score of 2,133, with the primary impact observed on the BGP signal. This signal measures the control plane visibility of internet routing prefixes. The BGP median value dropped by 14% from its peak during the event.
Other network signals showed concurrent deviations. The gtr-norm signal, which measures deviation from an expected traffic baseline, fell by 45%. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity based on backscatter measurements, recorded an 84% drop. The ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 /24 prefixes, showed a more modest 3% decline.
The cause has not been publicly attributed. Network connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation window.
