Uganda experienced a prolonged, severe disruption to its internet connectivity beginning on July 15, with the event remaining ongoing at the last observation on July 24. Technical Details
The disruption began at approximately 22:00 UTC on July 15 and was still active at 00:30 UTC on July 24, lasting over eight days. The event registered a severity score of 165,577, based on BGP signal analysis. The BGP signal measures the visibility of network prefixes in the global routing control plane; a sustained drop can indicate widespread routing instability or withdrawal.
Other network telemetry showed correlated anomalies. The Merit Network Telescope (merit-nt) signal, a proxy for overall network activity and connectivity, recorded an 83% drop from its peak. The Google Traffic Response (gtr) signal, which measures traffic volume relative to a baseline, fell by 55%. The normalized version of this signal (gtr-norm) showed a 49% decline. In contrast, active probing for IPv4 reachability (ping-slash24) and latency showed only minor fluctuations.
The cause has not been publicly attributed.
