Timor-Leste experienced a brief but notable disruption to its internet routing infrastructure in the early hours of August 23. The event, which lasted just under an hour, primarily affected the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), a critical system for directing traffic between networks.
Technical Details
The disruption occurred between 03:35 and 04:30 UTC. The BGP signal, which measures the stability of routing announcements for the country’s internet prefixes, recorded a severity score of 96. Concurrently, a separate measurement of active ICMP reachability across IPv4 network blocks showed a 44% drop from its peak during the observation window. Traffic volume, measured against a forecasted baseline, also registered a deviation.
The cause has not been publicly attributed. Connectivity was reported restored by 04:30 UTC.
