Cape Verde experienced a significant internet connectivity degradation on August 24, lasting over six hours. The disruption began around 18:10 UTC and persisted until 00:30 UTC on August 25, with the most severe impact recorded in the initial three-hour period. The event registered a severity score of 7,485, primarily driven by a sharp decline in network reachability.

Technical Details

The degradation was most pronounced in the ping-slash24 signal, which measures the reachability of IPv4 network blocks via active probing. This metric recorded a severity score of 7,485 across three distinct periods of reduced connectivity. The most severe period occurred between 18:10 and 21:50 UTC, with a score of 4,571.

Other network signals showed varying impacts. The gtr-norm signal, which tracks deviations from expected traffic volume, fell by 68% from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity based on backscatter measurements, dropped by 87%. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, responsible for routing announcements, remained stable throughout the event, showing no significant change in the number of visible network prefixes.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by 00:30 UTC on August 25.
