Niger experienced a significant internet connectivity disruption beginning on the evening of August 24, 2026, and lasting approximately five hours. The event, which started around 19:30 UTC, primarily affected the network’s control plane visibility, with restoration observed by 00:30 UTC on August 25.

Technical Details

The disruption registered a severity score of 455. The primary affected signal was the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), which measures the control plane visibility of network prefixes. The BGP signal recorded a median visibility drop of 2% from its peak, with values fluctuating between 194 and 198 visible prefixes.

Other network telemetry showed concurrent anomalies. Active probing for ICMP reachability across IPv4 /24 prefixes showed a 27% drop from its peak. A separate traffic volume forecast model, which compares observed traffic to an expected baseline, recorded a deviation with a 74% drop from its peak value. Backscatter measurements, a proxy for aggregate network activity, fell to zero during the event.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
