Angola has experienced a significant, prolonged degradation in its internet connectivity, lasting for more than ten days. The disruption, which began on August 14 and was still ongoing as of the last observation on August 25, primarily affected a key network backscatter measurement signal.
Technical Details
The Merit Network Telescope (merit-nt) signal, a proxy for aggregate internet connectivity based on backscatter traffic, recorded a severity score of 1,362,813. The signal’s median value dropped by 61% from its peak, indicating a substantial reduction in observable network activity. Other core connectivity metrics showed relative stability during the observation window. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, which manages routing information, showed no significant change. Active probing for ICMP reachability across IPv4 /24 prefixes (ping-slash24) also remained largely unaffected, with only a 2% drop from its peak.
Reported Cause
The cause of the prolonged disruption has not been publicly attributed.
