Nigeria experienced a significant disruption to its internet routing control plane on August 29 and 30, 2026. The event, which lasted for approximately six and a half hours, was characterized by a measurable degradation in Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) visibility. The disruption began around 18:05 UTC on August 29 and concluded by 00:30 UTC the following day.

Technical Details

The primary affected metric was the BGP control plane signal, which recorded a severity score of 460. This signal measures the stability and visibility of internet routing announcements for Nigerian IP address prefixes. A drop in this metric indicates a reduction in the number of globally visible routes, which can affect how international networks reach destinations within the country.

Concurrently, a complementary traffic volume signal, which forecasts deviations from expected data flow baselines, showed a 74% drop from its peak. Other infrastructure measurements, including active probing for network reachability and backscatter-based connectivity proxies, registered more minor declines of between 1% and 38% from their respective peaks during the observation window.

The cause has not been publicly attributed. The disruption had concluded by the end of the observation period.
