Burkina Faso Connectivity Degradation Lasted Over Four Days
Burkina Faso experienced a significant, multi-day degradation in internet connectivity beginning on May 18. The disruption, which lasted over four days, was characterized by a severe drop in network reachability, with a peak severity score of 161,543 recorded for the ping-slash24 signal. Connectivity was observed to have been restored by the early hours of May 23 UTC.
Technical Details
The primary affected signal was ping-slash24, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 /24 network prefixes. This signal recorded a severity score of 161,543 over the event’s duration. The gtr-norm signal, which tracks deviations from expected traffic baselines, showed a drop of 69% from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity based on backscatter measurements, registered a 96% decline. In contrast, the bgp control plane signal, which monitors routing advertisement visibility, remained stable with no significant drop reported.
The cause has not been publicly attributed.
The disruption remained ongoing for over four days before connectivity was restored.
