Burundi experienced a brief but notable disruption to its internet routing infrastructure on August 22. The event, which lasted approximately 15 minutes, was characterized by a significant drop in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane signal.

Technical Details

The disruption occurred between 12:35 and 12:50 UTC. The BGP signal, which measures the visibility of network prefixes announced to the global internet, recorded a severity score of 39. During the event, the number of visible BGP routes dropped by 3% from its peak.

Concurrently, other connectivity metrics showed deviations. The ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 network blocks, recorded a 21% drop from its peak. The gtr-norm signal, an indicator of traffic volume, also fell by 17% from its observed peak.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored following the brief event.
