Burundi experienced a connectivity disruption on August 17, 2026, characterized by significant instability in its internet routing control plane. The event lasted approximately two hours, beginning at 17:40 UTC and concluding by 19:50 UTC.

Technical Details

The primary affected signal was the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), which governs the exchange of routing information between networks. The BGP median signal recorded a severity score of 340, indicating a notable deviation from normal routing stability. The drop magnitude from its peak was measured at 3%.

Concurrently, other network health indicators showed degradation. The ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 network blocks, recorded a 15% drop from its peak. The gtr-norm signal, a normalized traffic volume indicator, fell by 33% from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate network connectivity, showed a 100% drop from its observed peak during the event window.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Network conditions were reported restored by the end of the observation period.
