The Republic of the Congo experienced a brief but significant degradation in internet connectivity on August 22. The disruption occurred between 10:00 and 10:52 UTC, with a severity score of 4,767. The primary impact was observed in a key network backscatter measurement signal.

Technical Details

The degradation was most pronounced in the merit-nt signal, which serves as a proxy for aggregate internet connectivity by measuring backscatter traffic. This signal recorded a severity score of 4,767, with its value dropping by 95% from its peak during the event. The disruption comprised two distinct periods: one from 10:00 to 10:42 UTC with a score of 3,967, and a second from 10:43 to 10:52 UTC with a score of 800.

Other network signals showed less pronounced effects. The gtr-norm signal, which measures deviation from an expected traffic baseline, dropped by 41% from its peak. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, responsible for routing visibility, and the ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 address blocks, remained largely stable with minimal recorded impact.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by 10:52 UTC.
