Ethiopia’s internet connectivity was impacted by a disruption to its control plane visibility early Wednesday. The event, which lasted approximately one hour, was centered on the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) signal, indicating a reduction in the global routing system’s view of Ethiopian network prefixes.

Technical Details

The disruption began at 04:50 UTC on August 19, 2026, and concluded by 05:50 UTC. The primary affected metric was the BGP signal, which recorded a severity score of 330. The BGP signal measures the control plane visibility and stability of a country’s announced IP prefixes on the global internet.

Concurrent measurements from other connectivity indicators showed varied performance. The ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across active IPv4 address blocks, showed a minor 8% drop from its peak. The gtr-norm signal, a normalized measure of traffic flow, recorded a more significant 71% drop from its observed peak during the event window.

Reported Cause

The cause of the disruption has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity metrics were reported restored to prior levels following the one-hour event.
