Guatemala experienced a prolonged disruption to its internet connectivity beginning on August 21 and lasting nearly 13 days. The event, which concluded on September 3, was characterized by a significant degradation in the network control plane, with a severity score of 21,223 recorded for the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) signal.

Technical Details

The disruption began at 08:25 UTC on August 21 and persisted until 00:30 UTC on September 3. The primary affected signal was BGP, which measures the control plane visibility and routing stability of a country’s internet prefixes. The severity score for this signal reached 21,223. While the BGP signal showed the most pronounced impact, other network health indicators also registered declines. The ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across active IPv4 address blocks, showed a 4% drop from its peak. The gtr-norm signal, a normalized measure of traffic volume, fell 66% from its peak, and the merit-nt backscatter measurement, an aggregate connectivity proxy, dropped 38%.

Reported Cause

The cause of the nearly two-week disruption has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
