Guatemala experienced a significant and prolonged disruption to its internet control plane visibility beginning on August 21. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) signal, a key indicator of routing stability, recorded a severity score of 16,198 over a period exceeding nine days before showing signs of recovery by August 31.

Technical Details

The disruption to the BGP signal began at approximately 08:25 UTC on August 21 and persisted until around 00:30 UTC on August 31, lasting for 9.7 days. The BGP signal measures the visibility of network prefixes in the global routing control plane. The severity score for this event peaked at 16,198. Concurrently, the Merit Network Telescope (merit-nt) backscatter measurement, which serves as a proxy for aggregate internet connectivity, showed a 41% drop from its peak value during the observation window. Other data plane metrics, including active probing for IPv4 reachability, remained relatively stable with minimal deviation.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
