Guatemala experienced a significant, week-long disruption to its internet routing infrastructure beginning August 21. The event, which lasted for 7.7 days until August 29, was characterized by a severe degradation in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, a critical system for global internet routing.

Technical Details

The disruption recorded a severity score of 12,848. The primary affected signal was the BGP median, which measures the control plane visibility of network prefixes. This signal remained at a constant low level of 2,806 visible prefixes throughout the event, indicating a sustained reduction in advertised routes.

Other measurement signals showed varying degrees of impact. The Merit Network Telescope (merit-nt) backscatter signal, an aggregate connectivity proxy, recorded a 35% drop from its peak. The normalized traffic (gtr-norm) signal showed a 21% decline from its peak baseline. The ICMP reachability (ping-slash24) signal showed a more modest 3% drop in reachable IPv4 address blocks.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

The disruption concluded at 00:30 UTC on August 29.
