Iraq experienced a significant internet connectivity disruption in the early hours of September 1, 2026. The event, which lasted approximately one hour, was characterized by a sharp degradation in both data plane reachability and routing stability. The disruption began at 03:30 UTC and was largely resolved by 04:30 UTC.

Technical Details

The disruption registered a high overall severity score of 2,467,237. The primary impact was observed in the ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 network prefixes. This signal recorded a severity score of 2,573, with reachability dropping by 68% from its peak during the event. Concurrently, the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) signal, which reflects routing control plane visibility, showed a 16% degradation from its peak, with a severity score of 959.

Supporting measurements showed a severe drop in traffic volume, with the gtr-norm signal, a normalized traffic baseline, falling 85% from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity, also dropped by 84% from its peak during the same period.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation window.
