Nigeria’s internet routing infrastructure experienced a control plane disruption in the early hours of Tuesday, September 2, 2026. The event began at 01:05 UTC and persisted for approximately three and a half hours, concluding by 04:30 UTC. The primary impact was observed in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) signal, which registered a severity score of 455.

Technical Details

The disruption was characterized by a degradation in the BGP control plane visibility. The BGP signal, which measures the number of network prefixes visible to the global routing system, recorded a drop of approximately 2% from its peak during the observation window. Concurrently, other network health indicators showed more significant deviations. The gtr-norm signal, a measure of traffic volume relative to a baseline, fell by 90% from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity derived from backscatter measurements, dropped by 44%.

The cause has not been publicly attributed. No specific incidents or maintenance events affecting Nigerian connectivity were reported in public channels during or immediately preceding the disruption window.

Network connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
