Somalia experienced a disruption to its internet routing infrastructure on Wednesday, September 3, 2026. The event, affecting the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, lasted for approximately three and a half hours. The disruption was first observed at 09:05 UTC and concluded by 12:30 UTC.

Technical Details

The primary impact was recorded on the BGP median signal, which registered a severity score of 505. This signal measures the visibility of network prefixes in the global routing table, indicating a reduction in the number of routes being advertised from Somalia. A concurrent, though less severe, drop of 11% was observed in the ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across active IPv4 address blocks. Backscatter measurements, a proxy for aggregate network activity, showed a more significant decline of 94% during the event window.

Reported Cause

The cause of the routing disruption has not been publicly attributed.

Network connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
